YRA's Youth Mental Health Advisory Committee (YMHAC) collaborates with program staff to research, design, deliver and evaluate initiatives aimed at improving access to quality mental health supports for young people, with a primary focus on preventative approaches. Committee members meet twice monthly for a period of six months to discuss, brainstorm and propose initiatives on issues impacting youth mental health. Throughout the six month term, the YMHAC focuses on one specific issue, proposes ideas, and puts together a presentation/report that is then shared with other stakeholders, including youth service agencies, young people and decision makers.
Youth on the committee learn valuable skills in community development, stakeholder engagement, program design and more, and most importantly contribute directly towards positively impacting young people.
Who Serves on the YAC?
Six youth, ages 16-24 years old, who reflect the communities/youth we serve, and have not used YRA services for at least six months. Youth complete an application and screening process, and attend an orientation session in order to serve on the committee.
How Long do YAC Members Serve on the Committee?
Youth are expected to serve for a 6 month commitment, meeting twice monthly either through in-person or phone meetings. YMHAC members contribute between 5-7 hours per month.
How are YAC Members Recognized?
Youth photos and blurbs are listed on our website as an integral part of our team. Youth are also provided with valuable training, experience, supports and supervision, and a letter of reference upon successful completion of their term. The training and experience youth members will receive will be valuable for professions in project management; community development; program design; fundraising; marketing, and more! Youth will also receive a $100 honourarium at the end of their term, along with a certificate and reference letter.
